Occupational Therapy (OT) is focused on supporting individuals to regain, maintain, or develop the skills needed to take part in meaningful everyday activities - known as “occupations.” These occupations can include anything that is important to a person’s daily life, independence, learning, and wellbeing.
Occupational Therapists work across a wide range of settings, so definitions can vary. In paediatric practice, OT’s typically work within family homes, nurseries, schools and college settings, residential environments, and care settings.
OTs are often called upon to identify and reduce barriers that impact a child or young person’s ability to engage successfully in daily occupations. This may include activities of daily living such as washing, dressing, tying shoelaces, and managing fastenings, as well as educational tasks like handwriting development, attention and regulation, sensory processing, and gross or fine motor skills. OT also supports participation in play, which is a vital childhood occupation in itself.
Occupational Therapists are uniquely skilled in identifying underlying factors that contribute to occupational difficulties, and in developing foundational skills that can then be transferred into meaningful functional performance in everyday life.
Craig adopts a child-centred, strengths-based, neuro-affirming, and co-regulatory approach, working collaboratively to support each child’s individual needs and priorities.
-
In essence, anyone experiencing challenges with everyday activities may benefit from seeing an Occupational Therapist. A formal diagnosis is not required to access support.
Paediatric Occupational Therapists commonly work with children and young people who may present with, or have a diagnosis of, conditions such as Autism (ASD), ADHD/ADD, sensory processing differences, Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), emotional regulation difficulties, trauma and attachment-related needs, anxiety, or fatigue.
However, OT is not diagnosis-led. It is focused on understanding each individual’s unique profile of strengths and challenges, and supporting their ability to participate in meaningful daily activities, learning, and play.

Craig’s services typically support children, young people and those entering early adulthood aged 3 to 25 years.

This very much depends on the needs and requirements of each case.
A date will be secured for Craig to visit school and or home to facilitate observation and any necessary assessment. This can span multiple days depending on need[s]. Any necessary questionnaires will be sent out for completion by key adults. Interviews with key adults will follow and or take place on the same day as a site visit.
This process and it’s timeline is therefore subject to the availability of others and can range from a couple to several weeks.
-
The following OT process is typically adhered to as a guideline:
Referral received
Information gathering: Craig will request previous reports, attainment levels, attendance, developmental history, and send out questionnaires to home / school.
Initial interview[s]: Craig will look to hold discussions with key adults - teachers, TA’s, tutors, parents and or carers.
Observations: Craig will coordinate with relevant parties at nursery/school/college/home/care home to carry out observations.
Assessment[s]: Craig will facilitate assessment where appropriate to do so based on clinical reasoning.
Analysis of data: Craig will score and analyse questionnaires, interviews, observations and assessments to reach a working hypothesis of need.
Report: Craig will write a formal report illustrating all of the above and offer recommendations for next steps.
Feedback meeting: Craig will offer an optional feedback meeting to discuss findings - this is typically offered remotely via TEAMS.
-
Once the assessment has been completed and all relevant information gathering and questionnaires have been returned; Craig works towards a two week turnaround for reports.
